Endoscopic Decompression Precision Meets Technology

Endoscopic Decompression, also known as Micro Endoscopic Decompression (MED), is a procedure designed to address the debilitating symptoms of spinal stenosis. This minimally invasive, advanced technique employs an endoscope, a sophisticated TV camera, as opposed to the traditional microscope used in similar procedures.

Key Differences: Microscopic vs. Endoscopic

Microscopic Decompression employs a microscope that offers three-dimensional imaging, providing an extensive view of the surgical site. In contrast, Endoscopic Decompression relies on a two-dimensional view provided by the endoscope. Both methods require excellent vision and illumination, as the tissues and structures needing removal can closely resemble normal surrounding tissues, including spinal nerves.

Comparable Outcomes, Varied Techniques

Despite the differences in visualization, both Microscopic and Endoscopic Decompression techniques are effective in achieving the desired micro decompression of the spinal canal.

At the Center for the Functional Restoration of the Spine, the approach chosen is always driven by your unique case and needs.

The Endoscopic Decompression Procedure

Anesthesia and Incision

Before the procedure begins, you will receive local anesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout. In some cases, the procedure will be performed under conscious sedation. The surgeon makes a very small incision in the back to access the affected area.

Endoscope Placement

With the incision in place, the surgeon introduces the endoscope, equipped with a high-definition camera, into the surgical field. This camera provides a clear view of the spinal structures.

Tissue Removal

The surgeon navigates the endoscope through the spinal canal, identifying the areas causing compression on the spinal nerves. Specialized instruments are used to carefully remove the problematic tissues and structures, alleviating pressure and pain.

Precise Evaluation

The real-time images from the endoscope enable precise evaluation of the surgical site, ensuring that all necessary decompression is achieved without causing damage to healthy tissues.

Incision Closure

Once the procedure is complete, the instruments are removed, and the small incision is closed. Your surgeon will provide you with specific post-operative instructions to ensure a supported recovery.

Spinal Stenosis

Spinal stenosis is a common and often painful condition characterized by the narrowing of the spinal canal.

This narrowing can put pressure on the spinal cord and nerves, leading to various symptoms such as back pain, leg pain, numbness, and weakness.

Spinal stenosis can be caused and/or worsened by various factors, including:

  • Aging
  • Arthritis
  • Herniated discs
  • Bone spurs
  • And other degenerative changes in the spine

Treatment options range from conservative approaches like physical therapy and medications to more invasive interventions like surgery, depending on the severity of symptoms and the patient's overall health. Early diagnosis and appropriate management under the care of an expert orthopedic medical team are crucial in overcoming spinal stenosis.
